Ed. Casey a Suicide
Word was brought to town last Saturday morning by chairman Buckwheat that Ed Casey had committed suicide at the place formerly owned by H. Barnaby.
We went to where the body was and found it lying upon the ground near the north shed. The evidence was so apparent that he had taken his own life that we decided an inquest was not necessary and ordered the body taken to town for burial.
The victim had planned his work well, as he had evidently sat down upon the ground, placing his rifle between his legs, throwing the right one across the stock of the gun, and placing the muzzle to his right eye discharged the fun by the use of an iron cleaning rod which lay by his side.
He had stayed with Charles LeBeouf and Eugene Boiley Thursday night. He got up about 4 o’clock Friday morning telling them he was going to Barker lake. They came to town after breakfast and were accompanied to their home by Joseph Thayer. The body was discovered the next morning by Boiley.
Casey had lived in this county some thirty years. He had no home, and no relatives so far as is known here. He was his worst enemy, and whatever his faults were, he possessed many good traits of character and honor, and lonely and cheerless as his life was, let us now draw the mantle of charity and hope that the reward of the future may be his.
The funeral was held Monday from the town hall, Rev. Wilson officiating, and was largely attended, after which the interment was made in the cemetery here.
