Town of Winter treasurer for 17 years

Lawrence J. Barnaby, age 58 years, a life time resident of Winter, WI, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in Ladysmith, on Friday, June 9.

He was born in Winter, Dec. 26, 1908, and received his education in the schools in Sawyer County.

On June 16, 1935, he was married to Hazel Halverson in Hayward. They made their home near Winter where he farmed until 4 years ago when he retired. He and his wife purchased the restaurant in Winter which he operated until the time of his death.

Mr. Barnaby served the Town of Winter as its treasurer for 17 years holding that position at the time of his death. He was a member of the Village of Winter Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winter.

Survivors are his wife; 2 sons, Lawrence of South Milwaukee, and Ronald of Winter, 2 daughters, Mrs. Harold (Jean) Thidemann of Winter, and Mrs. Ronald (Kathleen) Decker of Williams Bay, WI; 1 brother, Lloyd of Winter; 7 sisters, Mrs. John (Jess) Thayer, Detroit, MI; Mrs. William (Rose) Dean of Ashland, WI; Mrs. David (Josephine) Samlaska of Cumberland, WI; Mrs. James (Myrtle) Lockwood of Albany, CA; Mrs. Julius (Lillian) Jacobson of Cumberland, WI; Mrs. Robert (Winifred) Bachand of Albany, CA; Mrs. William (Cecelia) West of San Diego, CA; also 11 grandchildren.

Recitation of the rosary and services was held held on Sunday evening at 8PM in the Anderson Funeral Chapel in Hayward with Rev. Father Eugene Konopka officiating. Graveside services were held in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Winter on Monday at 10 AM.

Pallbearers were Adrian Pearson, Melvin Pearson, Sam Ruegger, Telford Fadness, LaVerne Dennis and Henry Baker.

“Yesteryears” column June 15, 1967

Lawrence J. Barnaby, age 58, a well-known life time resident of Winter passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in Ladysmith on Friday, June 9th.

A special meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Winter held on Wednesday evening at the Winter Town Hall, Mrs. Sam (Esther) Ruegger was named as Town Treasurer of the Town of Winter to fill out the unexpired term of Lawrence J. Barnaby who passed away Friday.
