Mrs. Elizabeth Crawford Smith, 90, a very well-known pioneer resident of the Winter community passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Bloom, in Hayward on Sunday.
She was born on July 14, 1871 at Orono, Maine. She came to Wisconsin with her parents as a small child. In 1892 she was united in marriage to Henry Crawford of Winter.
He preceded her in death in 1931.
She later married W.F. Smith, who died in 1945.
Mrs. Smith served as Postmaster in Winter and was Town Clerk here for many years.
She was a charter member of the Winter Presbyterian Church and started the first Sunday School here in 1906, which led to the building of the church in 1909. She was a member of the Rice Lake Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Smith left Winter about eight years ago to make her home with her granddaughter in Hayward. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm at the Winter Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Hervey officiating. Interment took place in the family lot at the Winter cemetery.
